Recently, a shocking military plan leak occurred in the United States. Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of The Atlantic, revealed that he was unexpectedly added to a chat group discussing the attack on Houthi militants in Yemen by senior members of the Trump administration, and obtained a top secret military plan in advance. This incident quickly sparked strong reactions from all walks of life.
According to Goldberg's article on March 24th, on March 11th, he received a friend invitation on the chat app Signal from the person with the same name as the Presidential National Security Advisor Waltz. On March 13th, I was once again added to a chat group called the 'Houthi PC Group'. The members of the group include 18 individuals with the same name or abbreviation as high-ranking officials in the US government, including Vice President Vance, Defense Secretary Hegsas, and Secretary of State Rubio. At first, Goldberg thought it was a prank, but as the conversation deepened, especially after the US military launched airstrikes against the Houthi militants in Yemen according to the group's plan, he finally confirmed the authenticity of the group chat. Before the airstrike, Defense Minister Hegesi also shared detailed information about the airstrike operation.
After the incident was exposed, White House National Security Council spokesperson Hughes responded by stating that Goldberg's disclosed group chat "seems to be true," but also claimed that the group chat information "demonstrates deep and thoughtful policy coordination among senior officials," and "the success of the US military's response to the Houthi armed actions shows that our military or national security is not threatened. However, Defense Secretary Hergeseth accused Goldberg of being a "fraud," stating that "no one sent messages discussing combat plans," while Goldberg criticized Hergeseth for lying.
During a media interview on the 25th, Trump stated that he is not discouraged by this matter and that "Waltz learned a lesson, but he is a good person." White House spokesman Levitt also said that Trump "still has confidence" in the national security team.
This incident has sparked fierce criticism from Democrats. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer stated that this is one of the most shocking military intelligence leaks he has seen in a long time and called for an immediate comprehensive investigation. The Democratic leader of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jack Reed, pointed out that this is one of the worst cases of security and common sense dysfunction, and the carelessness and unprofessional behavior of the Trump administration is shocking and extremely dangerous. Democratic Senator Gallego condemned the White House's "amateur behavior," while Democratic Congressman Meeks of the House Foreign Affairs Committee called for a hearing on "possibly the most shocking national security loophole in modern history.
Even some Republicans have expressed concerns. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman and Republican Senator Roger Wick stated that an investigation will be conducted on the basis of bipartisan cooperation; Republican Congressman Lawler criticized that confidential information should not be transmitted through non secure channels, let alone to people without security permits.
Internationally, this incident has also caused a huge uproar. US and international netizens and media have launched a wave of ridicule towards the Trump administration. The Latin Times reported that calls for the resignation of officials involved have flooded social media. The Beast Daily pointed out that since World War II, no US government has caused such unbearable, dangerous, and harmful chaos in its diplomatic and security agenda as the Trump administration. The European side is not only horrified by the hostility towards Europe expressed in high-level discussions of the US government, but also worried about being extorted by the US. In the group chat, senior US officials discussed charging economic returns to Europe, which sparked strong dissatisfaction among EU diplomats.
At present, the US Senate Intelligence Committee has started discussions on the issue of group chat leaks. Democratic lawmakers are demanding the release of the entire chat record and calling on the officials involved to resign. CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that he participated in the group chat, and Director of National Intelligence Gabbard swore that "no confidential materials were shared" during the chat. Both have agreed to conduct an audit of the situation. Trump stated that he will investigate the use of Signal and request the National Security Advisor to study Signal security issues.
This leak not only exposed significant loopholes in the Trump administration's handling of confidential information, but also had a serious impact on the international image and alliance relationships of the United States. The subsequent direction of the incident deserves continued attention.
