On the 19th, Türkiye's police detained Imam Olu, the mayor of Istanbul, on suspicion of corruption and assisting terrorist organizations. According to Reuters on the 19th, the largest opposition party in the country, the Republican People's Party, called it an "attempt at a coup against our next president". The leader of Türkiye's National Action Party, Bahcheri, wrote that no one can escape the supervision of the law, and he called on the public to treat the news about the arrest of Imamoglu rationally.
It is reported that Imamoglu is regarded as one of the strongest political opponents of President Erdogan of Türkiye. The Republican People's Party was scheduled to announce him as the candidate for the next presidential election of Türkiye (2028) this weekend. Dozens of police officers raided Imam Oulu's residence in Istanbul on the 19th. Prosecutors in Türkiye said that Imamoglu was accused of being a "criminal organization leader suspect". The police also arrested more than 100 suspects, including other politicians, journalists and businessmen. Some Türkiye media said that Imamoglu was not only accused of extortion and fraud, but also accused of assisting the PKK. Despite facing legal issues, Imam Oulu vowed to continue fighting, 'I will not give up'. On the 18th, Istanbul University announced the cancellation of Imam Oulu's degree, which may disqualify him from participating in the presidential election. According to the relevant laws of Türkiye, the president must complete higher education before he can hold public office.
Imam Oulu was born in 1971 and joined the Republican People's Party in 2008. In 2019, he won the Istanbul mayoral election twice, causing Erdogan's Justice and Development Party to suffer its biggest defeat in 20 years. In 2024, he was re elected. Reuters reported that Imam Oulu has faced legal challenges throughout his entire career, and in 2022 he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for insulting public officials, but the appellate court has not yet ruled on the case.
After Imamoglu was arrested, Türkiye's "t24" news network said that the exchange rate of Türkiye's lira against the US dollar fell to 41.12 lira against the US dollar, a record low. In addition, Türkiye's Anadolu News Agency reported that Türkiye's main stock index BIST 100 index fell 6.87% after the opening on the 19th, triggering the circuit breaker mechanism, due to the detention of Imam Olu and other factors. According to Türkiye's Sabah Daily, Istanbul's governor's office announced that all forms of demonstrations were prohibited throughout the province for four days. On the 19th, multiple subway stations in Istanbul stopped operating, and several roads were closed to vehicular traffic. According to Agence France Presse, the Internet access monitoring agency said that access to several social media platforms in the country was restricted shortly after the police raided the residence of Imaolu.
