According to the official measurement of the China Earthquake Networks Center, at 13:42 on March 12, Beijing time (11:42 on March 12, local time), a 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Nicobar Islands region of India, with the focal depth of 10 kilometers, the epicenter at 6.90 degrees north latitude and 92.45 degrees east longitude.
From the distribution of surrounding cities, there are no large or medium-sized cities within 200 kilometers of the epicenter, which to some extent reduces the risk of casualties and serious damage to urban infrastructure that earthquakes may cause. In terms of the terrain of the epicenter, the average altitude within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter is about -4156 meters, indicating that the earthquake occurred deep in the ocean.
The Indian Nicobar Islands are located in a special geographical position, at the junction of multiple tectonic plates, with frequent geological activities. The interaction between plates, such as friction, collision, and separation, causes stress to continuously accumulate underground. When the stress reaches a certain level, it can trigger earthquakes. The 5.7-magnitude earthquake once again reminds people that the region is facing the threat of earthquakes. Both local residents and relevant departments need to continue to be vigilant about earthquake disasters and do a good job in disaster prevention and reduction, such as strengthening earthquake monitoring and early warning, popularizing earthquake response knowledge, etc., in order to minimize the impact of possible future earthquake disasters.
